Max-stress criterion on typical unidirectional lamina strengths scaled with fiber volume. First-ply failure is the conservative design number (often matrix cracking in off-axis plies). Fiber failure is an upper-bound estimate. Neither is a tested allowable. Test coupons from your batch replace these.

Method

Classical lamination theory. Lamina stiffness from constituents: rule of mixtures for E1 and ν12, Halpin-Tsai for E2 (ξ = 2) and G12 (ξ = 1). Fiber volume from the fabric areal weight and the resin:fiber mass ratio, less voids. Woven fabrics are modeled as a 0/90 pair with a crimp knockdown (plain 10%, twill 5%, roving 12%); stitched fabrics have none. Engineering constants from the full ABD inverse, so unsymmetric stacks show their coupling instead of hiding it. Double-double after Tsai: a [±φ/±ψ] block repeated; coupling falls as the block repeats.
